Firstly, you need to install and activate BackWPup plugin. It will display a welcome page and add a BackWPup menu item in the sidebar of WordPress admin.

Creating Backup with BackWPup

From the above screenshot, click on Add New Job to create automated backup for your WordPress website.

Go into the General tab, provide name for this job because the name will help you in identifying every backup instance.

Under the Job Tasks section, select the type of tasks you want to make it perform. There are many available tasks including database backup, file backup, plugins list, and optimized database tables. If you are only interested in creating backup of your website, then you may select all the options except optimize database tables and check database table.

If you go under the Backup File Creation section, you need to choose an archive type. One of the default option is tar.gz, you can also choose zip archive.

After this, you will be having Job Destination section where your all WordPress website backup will get stored. But BackWPup avails you multiple options to store backup files. The backup file will get stored on your server. It would be better if you do not store backup file on server, use DropBox.

Scheduling Automated WordPress Backup using BackWPup

Now, jump on to the Schedule tab and choose when you want to back up your WordPress site. You can schedule it to run monthly, weekly or may be daily basis just by choosing WordPress cron option. There are many more choices for advance level users like start using URL or a command line interface for WordPress.

I will recommend to schedule a daily or weekly backup just by choosing WordPress cron option.
